Have you ever visited Düsseldorf, or is this a city you’d like to explore for its cultural landmarks? I’d also be curious to know if you’ve encountered similar monuments that use collage or symbolic storytelling in their design.
The Stadterhebungsmonument (Monument of the Elevation to City Status) was erected in 1988 to commemorate the 700th anniversary of Düsseldorf's elevation to city status following the Battle of Worringen. It is located in the Old Town, east of Burgplatz, at the corner of Joseph-Wimmer-Gasse and Müller-Schlösser-Gasse. The bronze sculpture was created by the Düsseldorf sculptor Bert Gerresheim.
This multifaceted collage combines many images, scenes, quotes, symbols, and allusions. It depicts, among other things, war scenes, the growth of the city from the Middle Ages to the present day, and urban market life. The motifs include the sealing of the city charter and the elevation of the parish church dedicated to St. Lambertus to a collegiate foundation.
